Topic: Eco Everest Expedition 2008 to atop Everest alarming climate
change impact
With a drive to raise awareness on the impact of climate change in the
Himalayan regions, Eco Everest Expedition 2008 will be launched in
spring session.
The expedition team will be led by the Dewa Steven Sherpa, a Everest
Summiteer affiliated with Asian Trekking in partnership with
International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and
the United nations Environment Programme(UNEP).
ICIMOD will render technical aid and carry out scientific research in
Khumbu region during the expedition, focusing Imja and Tsho glacial
lakes, according to press release by Eco Everest Expedition 2008.
Eco Everest Expedition 2008 will be a platform to draw global attention
to the issues of climate change and melting glaciers in the Himalaya
regions.
Likewise it will emphasize the growing threats which the glacial lakes
pose to local communities and environment in the regions.
Awareness on conserving the fragile mountain ecosystem will be raised
during the Expedition.
ICIMOD in the course of marking its 25th anniversary will work in the
mountain region and people in the Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH) aiming at
raising awareness, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and
enhancing the adaptation and resilience of the mountain.
As a part of the expedition, a Trust Fund will be set exclusively for
community development in the Khumbu regions and finance further research
as well as follow up particularly dangerous lake.
