From
Kathmandu, you enjoy an exciting flight to Lukla (2860m, 9384ft).
Trek to
Phakding. (2622m, 8603ft). Take some time to
visit the monastery located in the rocks above Chheplung. Cross
over the Dudh Kosi River to the west bank to reach the lodge.
|
|
|
2 |
Trek to Namche Bazar
(3340m, 10959ft). Sagarmatha National Park has
its new entrance here and you will have to show your permit. The path then climbs above the valley floor to one
of the highest suspension bridges in Nepal. From there the trail continues
climbing steeply through the forest. Namche Bazar is the largest
village and the administrative center of the Khumbu region. Situated in
a horseshoe-shaped valley high above the Bhote Kosi and surrounded by
steep hills, it faces the impressive north face of Mt. Kwangde peak (6187m).
|
|
3 |
Trek to
Khumjung (3790m, 12435ft), called the green valley. One of the most
interesting hikes is the climb up the hill north of town to the
Shyangboche airstrip area and Khumjung. You will enjoy the fantastic
view of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Kangtega, Thamserku and Ama Dablam. Visit
the local Khumjung Gompa, the school, hike to Kunde and visit the
hospital and the Gompa. |
|
4 |
Trek to Tengboche Monastery (3837m,
12589ft). Reach the Dudh Kosi
and the village of Phunki Tenga (3,321m, 10896ft) with its water-driven
mills and prayer wheels. Cross the river and climb steeply
through a dense forest. the largest monastery in Khumbu, perches on the
saddle of a ridge and commands an outstanding panorama with peaks in
every direction. The monastery is especially beautiful with Mt. Ama Dablam
rising up behind it. This is one of the most memorable sights anywhere
in Nepal.
Tengboche monastery is the site of the annual Mani Rimdu festival,
held at the November full moon. |
|
5 |
Trek to Pangboche
(3965m, 13009ft). At
a fork in the trail, keep to the left to reach
upper Pangboche with Pangboche Monastery and upper Pangboche village,
which once claimed to have the partial remains of a yeti. Unfortunately,
in 1991, these relics were stolen from the monastery and were never
recovered. Upper Pangboche is the more interesting section of the
village and is surrounded by large cedar trees. |
|
6 |
Trek to Phortse (3840m,
12599ft). At
Pangboche you take a different route for your return. The trail is steep
but rewarding as you climb high above a gorge along narrow yak trails to Phortse. This route is one of the best in the area for seeing musk deer,
the Himalayan Tahr, and other wildlife, including the Himalayan Blood
Pheasant and Danfay. The path is quite safe, but dramatically scenic and
suggestive of precipitous terrain. Across the stream is the dense sacred
forest of Tengboche and the Monastery. |
|
7 |
Trek to Namche Bazar.
Beautiful walk through Rhododendron, Birch, Willows and cross the
Dudkosi river and up hill to Mong La (4020m, 13190ft). This is good
viewpoint than walk along side to Sanasa and Melingo. From there a large
trail brings you to Namche Bazar. |
|
8 |
Trek to
Lukla. Down hill through the pine forest leaving behind
Everest and cross the several bridge on the Dudkosi river. Enjoy the greener
vegetation and cultivation along the Sherpa villages. Have lunch in
Phakding. There is no rush to reach Lukla today. On arrival
stay at a hotel near the airstrip. The airstrip itself is an interesting
place. Without actually seeing it happen, you might not believe a
nineteen-passenger plane could fly in and out of here. |
